సుందరకాండ.
అథ త్రిపంచాశస్సర్గః||

తస్య తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా దశగ్రీవో మహాబలః|
దేశకాలహితం వాక్యం భ్రాతురుత్తరమబ్రవీత్||1||

స|| దశగ్రీవః మహాబలః తస్య తద్వచనం దేశకాలహితం వాక్యం శ్రుత్వా భ్రాతురుః ఉత్తరం అబ్రవీత్||

The powerful ten-headed one, Ravana, hearing his brother's words which are keeping in line with the time, place and propriety, spoke in reply.

సమ్యగుక్తం హి భవతా దూతవధ్యా విగర్హితా|
అవశ్యం తు వధా దన్యః క్రియతా మస్యనిగ్రహః||2||
కపీనాం కిల లాంగూలం ఇష్టం భవతి భూషణమ్|
తదస్య దీప్యతాం శీఘ్రం తేన దగ్ధేన గచ్ఛతు||3||
తతః పశ్యం త్విమం దీనం అంగవైరూప్యకర్శితమ్|
సమిత్ర జ్ఞాతయః సర్వే బాన్ధవాః ససుహృత్ జనాః||4||

స|| భవతా సమ్యక్ ఉక్తం దూత వధ్యా విగర్హితా| అస్య నిగ్రహః వధాత్ అన్యః అవశ్యం క్రియతాం ||కపీనాం భూషణం లాంగూలం ఇష్టం భవతి | తత్ అస్య ( లాంగూలం) దీప్యతాం | తేన దగ్ధేన శీఘ్రం గచ్ఛతు||తతః ఇమం అంగవైరూప్యకర్శితం దీనం జ్ఞాతయః సర్వే బాంధవాః సమిత్ర ససుహృత్ పశ్యం||

' You have spoken well. Killing messenger is censured. His punishment other than killing can surely be done. The tail is Vanara's ornament, and is dear to them. His tail may be set on fire. When it is burning let him go. Then all his friends relatives and his kinsmen will see him disfigured and deformed'.

ఆజ్ఞాపయత్ రాక్షసేంద్రః పురం సర్వం స చత్వరమ్|
లాంగూలేన ప్రదీప్తేన రక్షోభిః పరిణీయతామ్||5||
తస్య తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా రాక్షసాః కోపకర్షితాః|
వేష్టయన్తి స్మ లాంగూలం జీర్ణైః కార్పాసజైః పటైః||6||

స|| రాక్షసేంద్రః ఆజ్ఞాపయత్ లాంగూలేన ప్రదీప్తేన ( అయం ) రక్షోభిః సర్వం పురం స చత్వరం పరిణీయతాం||తస్య తత్ వచనం శ్రుత్వా రాక్షసాః కోపకర్శితాః తస్య లాంగూలం జీర్ణైః కార్పాసజైః పటైః వేష్టయంతి స్మ||

The king of Rakshasas ordered that with the tail set on fire, the Rakshasas may take him all over the city's four corners. Hearing those words , the angry Rakshasas wrapped his tail with tatters of cotton.

సంవేష్ట్యమానే లాంగూలే వ్యవర్థత మహాకపిః|
శుష్క మిన్దనమాసాద్య వనేష్వివ హుతాశనః||7||
తైలేన పరిషిచ్యాథ తేఽగ్నిం తత్రాభ్యపాతయన్|
లాంగూలేన ప్రదీప్తేన రాక్షసాం స్తా నపాతయత్||8||
రోషామర్షా పరీతాత్మా బాలసూర్య సమాననః|

స||లాంగూలే సంవేష్ట్యమానే మహాకపిః వ్యవర్ధత (యథా)వనేషు శుష్కం ఇంధనం ఆసాద్య హుతాశనః ఇవ ||అథ తే తైలేన పరిషిచ్యతత్ర అగ్నిమ్ అభ్యపాతయన్ | బాలసూర్య సమాననః రోషామర్షపరీతాత్మా ప్రదీప్తేన లాంగూలేన తాన్ రాక్షసాన్ అపాతయత్||

While the tail was being wrapped, the great Vanara grew in size like a wild fire fed by dry wood of the forest. Then they soaked the tail and set fire to the same. Overtaken by indignation and anger and looking like a rising Sun, he struck the Rakshasas with his tail.

లాంగూలం సంప్రదీప్తం తు ద్రష్టుం తస్య హనూమతః||9||
సహ స్త్రీ బాలవృద్ధాశ్చ జగ్ముః ప్రీతా నిశాచరాః|
స భూయ సంగతైః క్రూరైః రాక్షసైః హరిసత్తమః ||10||
నిబద్ధః కృతవాన్ వీరః తత్కాలసదృశీం మతిమ్|

స|| తస్య హనూమతః లాంగూలమ్ ప్రదీప్తం తం ద్రష్టుం ప్రీతాః నిశాచరాః బాలవృద్ధాశ్చ సహ స్త్రీ జగ్ముః||సంగతైః క్రూరైః రాక్షసైః భూయః నిబద్ధః సః వీరః హరిసత్తమః తత్కాల సదృశీం మతిం కృతవాన్ ||

To see the Hanuman with his tail burning bright, happy Rakshasas, children and old people along with women came. When the Rakshasas gathered together and bound Hanuman again, the best of Vanaras thought of what was appropriate for the moment.

కామం ఖలు నమే శక్తా నిబద్ధాస్యాపి రాక్షసాః||11|
ఛిత్వాపాశాన్ సముత్పత్య హన్యామహం ఇమాన్పునః|
యది భర్తుర్హితార్థాయ చరన్తం భర్తృశాసనాత్ ||12||
బధ్నన్యేతే దురాత్మానో న తు మే నిష్కృతిః కృతా|
సర్వేషామేవ పర్యాప్తో రాక్షసానా మహం యుధి||13||
కింతు రామస్య ప్రీత్యర్థం విషహిష్యేఽహ మీదృశం|
లంకా చారయితవ్యా వై పునరేవ భవదితి||14||

స||రక్షసాః నిబద్ధస్యాపి మే న శక్తాః కామం ఖలు | అహం పునః పాశాన్ ఛిత్వాసముత్పాత్య ఇమాన్ హన్యామ్||భర్తుః హితార్థాయ చరంతం ఏతే దురాత్మనః బర్తృశాసనాత్ బధ్నంతి యది మే నికృతిః న కృతా||యుధి అహం సర్వేషాంఏవ రాక్షసానాం పర్యాప్తః | కింతు రామస్య ప్రీత్యర్థం అహం ఈదృశమ్ లంకా పునరేవ చారయితవ్యా భవేత్ | ఇతి విషహిష్యే||

' Although bound by Rakshasa they are not capable. I can again break the bonds and kill them. While moving here for the well-being of my master, these evil ones bound me on the orders of their master, I will not let them escape. In the battle I am enough for all the Rakshasas. But for the sake of Rama I will go around Lanka like this. I will bear this.

రాత్రౌన హి సుదృష్టా మే దుర్గకర్మ విధానతః|
అవశ్యమేవ ద్రష్టవ్యా మయా లంకా నిశాక్షయే||15||
కామం బద్ధస్య మే భూయః పుచ్ఛస్యోద్దీపమనేన చ|
పీడాం కుర్వన్తు రక్షాంసి న మేఽస్తి మనసః శ్రమః||16||

స|| లంకా దుర్గకర్మవిహానతః రాత్రౌ సుదృష్టా న హి నిశాక్షయే మయా | అవస్యమేవ ద్రష్టవ్యా||భూయః బద్ధస్య మే పుచ్ఛస్య ఉద్దీపనేన రక్షాంసి కామం పీడాం కుర్వంతు | మే మనసః శ్రమః నాస్తి||

' The fortifications of Lanka have not been seen by me clearly in the late hours of the night. They ought to be seen. Again by binding me and burning of the tail the Rakshasa's may torment me as they wish. I am not tired '.

తతః తే సంవృతాకారం సత్త్వవన్తం మహాకపిం|
పరిగృహ్య యయుర్హృష్టా రాక్షసాః కపికుంజరమ్||17||
శంఖ భేరీనినాదైః తం ఘోషయన్తః స్వకర్మభిః|
రాక్షసాః క్రూరకర్మాణః చారయన్తి స్మ తాం పురీమ్||18||
అన్వీయమానో రక్షోభి ర్యయౌ సుఖమరిన్దమః|
హనుమాంశ్చారయామాస రాక్షసానాం మహపురీం||19||

స|| తతః తే రాక్షసాః హృష్టాః సంవృతాకారం సత్త్వవంతం కపికుంజరం మహాకపిం పరిగృహ్య యయుః|| క్రూరకర్మణః రాక్షసాః తం శంఖభేరీనినాదైశ్చ స్వకర్మభిః ఘోషయంతః తాం పురీం చారయంతి స్మ||అరిందమః హనుమాన్ రక్షోభిః అన్వీయమానః సుఖం యయౌ| రాక్షసానాం మహపురీం చారయామాస||

Then the Rakshasas joyfully captured the shrunken Vanara, the elephant among Vanaras, and left. The Rakshasas who are known cruel actions, beating drums and blowing conches , announcing their deeds, paraded him around the city. The subduer of enemies , Hanuman being followed by Rakshasas went around happily. He ranged forth in the city of Rakshasas.

అథాపశ్యత్ విమానాని విచిత్రాణి మహాకపిః|
సంవృతాన్ భూమిభాగాంశ్చ సువిభక్తాంశ్చ చత్వరాన్||20||
వీధీశ్చ గృహసంబాధాః కపిః శృంగాటకాని చ|
తథా రథ్యోపరథ్యాశ్చ తథైవ గృహకాన్తరాన్||21||
గృహాశ్చ మేఘసంకాశాన్ దదర్శ పవనాత్మజః|

స|| అథ మహాకపిః విచిత్రాణి విమానాని సంవృతాన్ భూమిభాగాంశ్చ సువిభక్తాన్ చత్వారాన్ అపశ్యత్ ||పవనాత్మజః కపిః గృహసంబాధాః వీథిః శృంగాటకాని చ తథా రథ్యోపరథ్యాశ్చ తథైచ చ గృహకాంతరాన్ మేఘసంకాసాన్ గృహాంశ్చ దదర్శ||

Then the great Vanara saw wonderful towering mansions secured all over and well laid out squares and streets. The son of wind god, the Vanara, saw streets with tall mansions, highways and byways. Similarly he saw interior routes of houses, also houses appearing like clouds.

చత్వరేషు చతుష్కేషు రాజమార్గే తథైవ చ||22||
ఘోషయన్తి కపిం సర్వే చారీక ఇతి రాక్షసాః|
స్త్రీబాల వృద్ధా నిర్జగ్ముః తత్ర తత్ర కుతూహలాత్||23||
తం ప్రదీపితలాంగూలం హనుమన్తం దిదృక్షవః|

స|| సర్వే రక్షసాః చత్వరేషు చతుష్కేషు తథైవ చ రాజమార్గే కపిం చారీకః ఇతి ఘోషయంతి||ప్రదీపితలాంగూలం తం హనూమంతం దిదృక్షవః స్త్రీబాలవృద్ధాః తత్ర తత్ర కుతూహలాత్ నిర్జగ్ముః||

All the Rakshasas went around the cross roads, the altars with four pillars, the royal path announcing the Vanara as a thief. To see the Hanuman with glowing tail , women, children and old people gathered everywhere.

దీప్యమానే తతః తస్య లాంగూలాగ్రే హనూమతః||24||
రాక్షస్య స్తా విరూపాక్ష్యః శంసుర్దేవావ్యాస్తదప్రియమ్|
యస్త్వయా కృత సంవాదః సీతే తామ్రముఖః కపిః||25||
లాంగూలేన ప్రదీప్తేన స ఏష పరిణీయతే|

స|| తతః తత్ర హనూమతః లాంగూలాగ్రే దీప్యమానే విరూపాక్ష్యః తాః రాక్షస్యః దేవ్యాః అప్రియం తత్ శంసుః|| సీతే యః తామ్రముఖః కపిః త్వయా కృతసంవాదః స ఏషః ప్రదీప్తేన లాంగూలేన పరిణీయతే ||

Then as the Hanuman's tail was set on fire , the ugly looking Rakshasis took the unpleasant news to the divine lady Sita. ' Oh Sita, the Vanara with red face , who spoke to you , he was being paraded in the streets with his tail on fire'.

శ్రుత్వా తద్వచనం క్రూరం ఆత్మాపహరణోపమమ్||26||
వైదేహీ శోక సంతప్తా హూతాశనముపాగమత్|
మంగళాభిముఖీ తస్య సా తదాssసీన్మహాకపేః||
ఉపతస్థే విశాలాక్షీ ప్రయతా హవ్యవాహనమ్|||27||

స|| వైదేహీ ఆత్మాపహరణోపమం క్రూరం తత్ వచనం శ్రుత్వా శోకసంతప్తా హుతాశనం ఉపాగమత్||తదా సా మహాకపేః తస్య మంగళాభిముఖీ ఆసీత్| విశాలాక్షీ ప్రయతా హవ్యవాహనమ్ ఉపతస్థే||

Vaidehi hearing that news which was as cruel as her abduction, burning with grief invoked the god of fire. Then that lady wishing auspicious happenings for the great Vanara invoked the god of fire in her mind.

యద్యస్తి పతిశుశ్రూషా యద్యస్తి చరితం తపః|
యది చాస్త్యేకపత్నీత్వం శీతో భవతు హనూమతః||28||
యదికించిదనుక్రోశః తస్య మయ్యస్తి ధీమతః|
యది వా భాగ్యశేషో మే శీతో భవతు హనూమతః||29||
యది మాం వృత్తి సంపన్నాం తత్సమాగమ లాలసాం|
స విజానాతి ధర్మాత్మా శీతో భవతు హనూమతః||30||
యది మాం తారయేదార్యః సుగ్రీవః సత్యసంగరః|
అస్మాదుఃఖామ్బుసంరోధాత్ శీతో భవ హనూమతః||31||

స|| పతిశుశ్రూషా అస్తి యది తపః చరితం అస్తి యది ఏకపత్నీత్వం అస్తి చ యది త్వం హనూమతః శీతః భవ||ధీమతః తస్య మయి కించిత్ అనుక్రోశః అస్తి యది మే భాగ్య శేషః యది వా హనూమతః శీతః భవ||ధర్మాత్మా సః మామ్ వృత్తసంపన్నాం తత్సమాగమలాలసాం విజానతే యది హనూమతః శీతః భవ||ఆర్యః సత్యసంగరః సుగ్రీవః అస్మాత్ దూఖామ్బు సంరోధాత్ మాం తారయేత్ యది హనూమతః శీతః భవ||

' If I have served my husband, if I have practiced austerities, if I am loyal to my husband , you be cool for Hanuman. If the wise one has a little compassion for me , if there is any luck with me, let Hanuman become cool. If the righteous one believes I am pure in mind , and that I am longing to unite with him then be cool for Hanuman. If Sugriva the noble one who is true to his promise in warfare is going to rescue me from this sea of sorrows then be cool for Hanuman'.

తతః తీక్ష్‍ణార్చి రవ్యగ్రః ప్రదక్షిణశిఖోఽనలః|
జజ్వాల మృగశాబాక్ష్యా శ్శంసన్నివ శివం కపేః||32||
హనుమజ్జనకశ్చాపి పుచ్ఛానలయుతోఽనిలః|
వవౌ స్వాస్థ్యకరో దేవ్యాః ప్రాలేయానిలశీతలః||33||

స|| తతః అనలః మృగశాబాక్ష్యాః కపేః శివం శంసన్నివ తీక్ష్ణార్చిః ప్రదక్షిణశిఖః అవ్యగ్రః జజ్వాల||హనుమత్ జనకః అనిలః పుచ్ఛానలయుతః దేవ్యాః స్వాస్థ్యకరః ప్రాలేయానిలశీతలః వవౌ||

Then tips of the intense flame glowed steadily as though assuring the fawn eyed lady about being auspicious to the Vanara. The father of Hanuman the wind god and the fire god burning the tail, blew cool wind to calm her down.

దహ్యమానే చ లాంగూలే చింతయామాస వానరః||34||
ప్రదీప్తోఽగ్నిరయం కస్మాన్నమాం దహతి సర్వతః|
దృశ్యతే చ మహాజ్వాలః కరోతి న చ మే రుజమ్||35||
శిశిరస్యేవసంపాతో లాంగూలాగ్రేప్రతిష్టితః|

స||లాంగూలే దహ్యమానే వానరః చింతయామాస| సర్వతః ప్రదీప్తః అయం అగ్నిః మామ్ కస్మాత్ న దహతి ||మహాజ్వాలః దృశ్యతే మే రుజం న కరోతి చ లాంగూలాగ్రే శిశిరస్య సంఘాతః ప్రతిష్టితః ఇవ ||

As the tail continued burning Hanuman started thinking. Why is this the fire which is burning everywhere is not burning me. The great fire is seen, but it is not hurting me. At the end of my tail, it is cool like there is a mass of ice.

అథవా తదిదం వ్యక్తం యదృష్టం ప్లవతా మయా||36||
రామప్రభావాదాశ్చర్యం పర్వతః సరితాం పతౌ|
యది తావత్ సముద్రస్య మైనాకస్య చ ధీమతః||37||
రామార్థం సంభ్రమస్తాదృక్కిమగ్నిర్నకరిష్యతి|
సీతాయాశ్చానృశం స్యేన తేజసా రాఘవస్య చ||38||
పితుశ్చ మమ సఖ్యేన న మాం దహతి పావకః|

స|| అథవా యత్ ప్లవతా మయా రామప్రభావాత్ పర్వతః సరితాం పతౌ ఆశ్చర్యం దృష్టం తత్ ఇదం వ్యక్తమ్||సముద్రస్య ధీమతః మైనాకస్య రామార్థం తాదృక్ సంభ్రమః యది అగ్నిః కిం న కరిష్యతి|| సీతాయాః అనృశంస్యేన రాఘవస్య తేజసా మమపితుః సఖ్యేన పావకః మామ్ న దహతి||

' Or it may be because of Rama's power. Like the wonderful incident of a mountain floating in the sky seen while I leaped, If the wise Sagara and Mainaka had such anxiety to serve Rama , why will not god of fire do ? Because of Sita's steadfast chaste character, Raghava's luster, and my father's friendship , the god of fire is not burning me.

భూయః స చింతయామాస ముహూర్తం కపికుంజరః||39||
ఉత్పపాతాథ వేగేన ననాద చ మహాకపిః|
పురద్వారం తతః శ్రీమాన్ శైలశృంగమివోన్నతమ్||40||
విభక్తరక్షస్సంభాధ మాససాదానిలాత్మజః|

స|| కపికుంజరః సః మహాకపిః భూయః చింతయామాస | అథ వేగేన ఉత్పపాద ననాద చ||తతః శ్రీమాన్ అనిలాత్మజః శైలశృంగమివ ఉన్నతం విభక్తరక్షః సంబాధామ్ పురద్వారం ఆససాద||

The best among Vanaras again started thinking. Then flew up quickly and roared. Then the illustrious son of wind god reached the entrance of the city which is like the peak of the mountain and turned away the Rakshasas.

స భూత్వా శైలసంకాశః క్షణేన పునరాత్మవాన్ ||41||
హ్రస్వతాం పరమాం ప్రాప్తోబన్దనాన్యవశాతయత్|
విముక్తాశ్చాభవత్ శ్రీమాన్ పునః పర్వతసన్నిభః||42||
వీక్షమాణాశ్చ దదృశే పరిఘం తోరణాశ్రితమ్|
స తం గృహ్య మహాబాహుః కాలాయస పరిష్కృతమ్||43||
రక్షిణస్తాన్ పునః సర్వాన్ సూదయామాస మారుతిః|

స|| ఆత్మవాన్ సః శైలసంకాశః భూత్వా క్షణేన హ్రస్వతాం ప్రాప్తః బన్ధనాని అవశాతయత్||శ్రీమాన్ విముక్తశ్చ పునః పర్వతసన్నిభః అభవత్| వీక్షమాణశ్చ తోరణాశ్రితం పరిఘం దదర్శ||మహాబాహుః సః మారుతిః కాలాయసపరిష్కృతం తం పునః గృహ్య సర్వాన్ తాన్ రక్షిణః సూదయామాస||

Hanuman making himself appear like a mountain, in a moment making himself small he cast off all the ropes binding him. The illustrious one having freed himself again assumed the form of the size of a mountain. Looking around , sitting on the archway he found the iron club. The strong armed son of wind god, again seizing the club made of black iron killed all the guards.

స తాన్ నిహత్వా రణచణ్డవిక్రమః సమీక్షమాణః పునరేవ లంకామ్||
ప్రదీప్తలాంగూలకృతార్చిమాలీ ప్రకాశతాssదిత్య ఇవార్చిమాలీ||44||

స|| రణచండవిక్రమః సః తాన్ నిహత్వా పునరేవ లంకాం సమీక్షమానః ప్రదీప్తలాంగూలకృతార్చిమాలీ అర్చిమాలీ అదిత్య ఇవ ప్రకాశత||

Hanuman who was of fearsome valor in war with the Rakshasas, having killed them gazed at Lanka once again. Garlanded by the flames of his tail around, he shone like the Sun covered with garland of rays.

ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే ఆదికావ్యే వాల్మీకీయే
చతుర్వింశత్ సహస్రికాయాం సంహితాయామ్
శ్రీమత్సుందరకాండే త్రిపంచాశస్సర్గః ||

Thus ends Sarga fifty three of Sundarakanda of Ramayana , the first poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki .
